It’s an early autumn as we get up at the crack of dawn to catch a two hour flight from London to Béziers in southern France, where we’ll be spending a few days boating on the Canal du Midi in the Languedoc on a hired Le Boat’s Horizon boat.

Beziers airport is a mere 10 minutes by car from Port Cassafieres where we are picking up our boat at one of the many Le Boat bases.

Le Boat have several types of boats available for hire in many European destinations, such as France, Italy, England, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Scotland, Ireland and now also Canada, but it’s the Languedoc and its beauty that’s attracted us to this part of France.
Stretching from Toulouse to the Mediterranean sea, the Canal du Midi is popular with boaters for its natural beauty, wildlife watching, lovely villages, old towns and vineyards that dot its banks.

It’s three of us in our party with only one not having any boating experience, but this is no problem as Le Boat’s vessels are designed to be driven by (almost) anyone. Once arrived at the base we are shown to our boat, the Horizon 1, an original Le Boat’s designed vessel.

Before we set off Le Boat’s instructor Kevin takes us for a spin to teach us how to drive our craft and to show us where everything is. Less than an hour later, eager and confident, we are ready to set off.

Our boat: Horizon 1

All Le Boat’s boats have been originally created by the company and we are very pleased with the size and layout of ours which is perfect for a group of three people.

Measuring 11.5m x 4.25m, the Horizon 1 is spacious. The flybridge allows for stunning views of the canal as you drive, and the area is very sociable with a sunpad, and seats on the foredeck, whilst aft a dining table and seats allow for eating and relaxing alfresco. A barbecue and sink to port mean that meals can be cooked in the open air if the weather allows.

On the main deck there is the cockpit and the saloon, which boasts large windows that allow for panoramic views, a dining area with a roomy galley with all mod cons, which we’ll use extensively in the following days when we encounter a spot of bad weather. The Horizon 1 sleeps up to five with one foredeck master cabin with en-suite and a smaller cabin with twin beds to starboard. The dining seats can also be turned into two beds.

The Canal du Midi

Our first plan to head east towards the ancient town of Agde and the Thau Lake is soon scrapped due to the rainy weather forecast and poor visibility. We decide to head west instead, to another ancient town, Bèziers, famous for its stunning cathedral, Le Pont Vieux (the old bridge) and the luscious Le Plateau des Poètes, a park designed by the Bülher brothers in a typical English style. From there we’ll go through the famous Fonserannes locks, before heading to the town of Trèbes.

First stop is Cères, only 7km from the base, where we stock up on provisions.

As we approach Bèziers we hit our first lock. The good news is that on the Canal du Midi most locks are not only electrical but also manned, so going through them is a doddle: one person at the helm, one at the front and one at the back to throw the lines to the lock keeper, a few minutes wait, pull the lines back in et voila’!

Moorings is also as easy. As long as a safe distance is kept from any bridge, one can pretty much get their poles out and moor anywhere on the banks of the canal. There are also proper moorings with services along the way, but with our petrol and water tanks filled up, we don’t find the need to use them.

As we head towards Béziers we pass through the stunning canal viaduct, which can only be described as a lush tunnel of trees. The view is spectacular and despite the weather forecast the sun is shining so we decide to moor and make the most of the light and warmth and enjoy a BBQ up on the flybridge.

As the bright light starts turning a stunning pink, we realise it’s time to make a move. Night cruising is forbidden on the Canal du Midi and we still need to reach our destination whilst visibility is good.

It doesn’t take long to get to Béziers but we arrive just as a storm breaks out. We moor only a few minutes from Le Pont Vieux, a fine example of Roman architecture on the river Orb.

As it’s raining heavily this is not quite the right time to explore the town, so we retreat into the saloon where the excellent WiFi connection on the boat, a bit of music, a game of cards and a bottle of local wine keep us entertained until we feel peckish again and cook up a storm in the spacious galley using the local produce we bought.

After a restful night’s sleep and a spot of breakfast we are told that there’s a last minute lock keepers’ strike (how very French!) so we put on our waterproofs and set off to explore Béziers.
By the time we arrive in the centre of the town the sun is shining. We take in the local cultural spots, the Saint-Nazare cathedral and the Church of the Madeleine. The rain stops and the sun shines gloriously: the perfect time to grab a light lunch in a piazza just by the church sipping a glass of white wine as we watch the world go by.

On our way back we take a leisurely walk and stop at the beautiful Plateau des Poètes with its grottos, gardens and water features.

It’s another rainy night and with the strike still ongoing, we settle in our lovely boat for a long dinner and a film.

The following day we realise it will take us forever to go through to the famous eight Forsarennes locks, as many other boats are in a similar situation as ours, so there’s a lot of congestion on the waterways. We head over to see the famous locks on foot, before turning the boat around and heading east towards Agde.

Built in 575 BC and a former Greek colony, Agde is a pretty town with plenty of little lanes, piazzas, cute boutiques and outdoor markets. It features some beautiful churches too, including St Stephen’s Cathedral and St Andrew’s church. After a few hours of sightseeing it’s time to stop for a bite to eat in Place de la République, a pretty square with shops and bars dotted around it. Once again, the sun is shining and we enjoy our meal taking it all in.

As the end of our trip approaches and with an early flight back to London in the morning, we stop to buy more fresh produce (and of course more wine) for our last meal on the boat before setting off on a picturesque journey back to Port Cassifières. It’s late afternoon by the time we arrive back at the base. There are no clouds in the sky and the temperature is warm enough for another feast of French food alfresco. We fire up the barbecue, open a bottle of red and break bread, knowing full well that we already can’t wait to come back.

Hiring a Le Boat boat

Le Boat has many bases around Europe including France, Italy, England, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Scotland, Ireland. Since the end of 2016 they’ve also added a base in Canada on the Rideau Canal. Le Boat has 44 boat types on their fleet, sleeping up to 12 people on the Horizons vessels and up to 10 on the Vision fleet.

The Horizon 1 costs £1026.00 for seven nights, and comes with a full tank of fuel and water.

Le Boat Ownership Programme

The Ownership Programme is aimed at those who enjoy boating several times a year. A two cabin, one bathroom Horizon 1150 is priced at £170K and can be used three months a year over seven years. The boat will remain as part of Le Boat charter fleet so that they can hire it out when the owner is not using it. Under this scheme the company guarantees the owner a monthly income of 7% per year of the value of the boat (calculated after 20% VAT). Le Boat will also take care of the mooring, insurance and maintenance for free. Holidays can be taken on any boat of Le Boat’s charter fleet in any of their 16 European cruising regions and also Canada.

The S.S. Beatrice will be unveiled next year as the newest ultra-luxurious super ship in the Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection.

Currently, the vessel is known as the River Beatrice and takes passengers on tours of Europe’s stunning Danube River, allowing guests to take in the picturesque cities of Budapest and Vienna.

In spring 2018, the River Beatrice will be transformed into the S.S. Beatrice after an extensive bow-to-stern renovation.

It will then join Uniworld’s super ship fleet, which includes the likes of the luxurious S.S Joie de Vivre, which was unveiled by Dame Joan Collins in May.

The renovation of the River Beatrice will include the redesigning of all public spaces and rooms.

The scent of citrus fruit, the salty air, the brightly coloured buildings perched on a cliff, yachts floating on the azure sea: Amalfi and the Amalfi Coast are considered one of the most beautiful and romantic places in the world, and it’s easy to see why.

Amalfi and the Coast: culture and natural beauty

Amalfi lies at the mouth of a ravine and was once a rich and powerful maritime republic with 70,000 inhabitants. The town and the area surrounding it have kept their history and traditions alive and the Byzantine, Arabic and Norman influences are still very much intact.

The Amalfi Coast is hugely popular with tourists from all over the world, especially with British and American visitors.
Easy to reach by sea or plane – just over an hour’s drive from Naples airport – this enchanting corner of southern Italy is the perfect romantic and relaxing break.

Its mild climate make it a popular destination from April until October, the calm blue sea makes it a sailing paradise, the locally produced food and drink (this is the birthplace of limoncello) are to die for, its natural beauty is simply breathtaking and there are plenty of things to do, with many of cultural offerings, unspoilt treks for hikers and, of course, a vast array of watersports. Locals are friendly, polite and helpful, always eager to share their knowledge and love for this beautiful place. The area is well looked after, clean and with no crime.

The coast is home to some truly stunning towns, villages and islands. Amalfi, Positano, Ravello, Maiori, Atrani, Minori, Praiano, Cetara and Vietri sul Mare are a stone’s throw away from each other, and easily reached by car, public transport and by sea. The island of Capri, whilst technically not part of the Amalfi Coast, is also nearby, and every year in May it hosts the Rolex Capri Sailing Week, a real spectacle not to be missed. Sorrento and Ischia are also nearby and well worth a visit.

Amalfi is an ideal base to explore the coast. Whilst small, it is one of the largest and most vibrant towns in the area and offers plenty to do and see. Unmissable are St Andrew’s Cathedral (Il Duomo), which overlooks the beautiful Piazza Duomo, in the heart of Amalfi, il Chiostro del Paradiso and the Paper Museum.
The main square is dotted with boutiques, restaurants, bars and cafés, gelaterie (ice cream parlours), pasticcerie (patisseries) and shops that sell local produce, such as limoncello, citrus jams, pasta, fine leather goods and locally made ceramics, painted in bright hues of yellow and blue. Go off the beaten track and explore the hidden corners of Amalfi. Take any stone staircase or vicolo (lane) and you’ll discover some veritable gems, such as homes built in the rocks, family-run restaurants where the locals eat and pretty boutiques and local workshops.

One of the most beautiful hotels in the world: Hotel Santa Caterina

There are several fine hotels in Amalfi, but for that veritable dolce vita experience, look no further than Hotel Santa Caterina. Built in the late 19th century, this Liberty style five star hotel is family run and it certainly shows in its character, service – which is discreet, personal and never intrusive – and the luxurious and elegant touches throughout the hotel.

Perched on the clifftop above Amalfi, Santa Caterina offers stunning views of the coastline and it’s only a 10 minutes walk from the town centre, although for guests who prefer not to walk, there is also a free of charge regular shuttle bus.
The hotel boasts the beautiful and award winning Restaurant Santa Caterina, located on the terrace – which is sheltered by a wisteria-covered pergola and offers stunning sea views – the Terrazza Bar, perfect for an aperitivo and a well stocked wine cellar.

Take the glass lift down a couple of floors and you’ll find yourself at the private beach club with sea water pool. The Beach Club’s Ristorante al Mare and Bar is on another lower terrace overlooking the sea, and there is also a fitness centre and a spa, where guests can enjoy face and body treatments that use local Mediterranean herbs and citrus fruits.
The hotel also has its own lemon grove and sweetly scented, colourful gardens, with a spectacular sea view.

Designed in classic Italian architecture and decorated with the colours of the Mediterranean, the rooms are light, elegant and refined, with 36 partial sea views and executive partial sea view, front sea views and deluxe bedrooms, 13 junior suites, executive junior suites and standard suites located in the main building. The garden suites are aptly located in the garden area of the hotel. An additional 17 deluxe rooms, junior suites and suites are situated in the hotel’s adjacent Villa Santa Caterina and the recently acquired Villa Il Rosso. All bathrooms are beautifully tiled and stocked with luxurious Bulgari toiletries.

The Santa Caterina barmen are masters when it comes to cocktails. Try a Bellini, made with Prosecco and freshly squeezed peach juice or one of the many varieties of Aperol Spritz, with the saffron and rosemary one being of particular note. The wine list is also excellent and the staff will be able to help you choose.  Aperitif always comes with complimentary snacks, which include olives, nuts, crisps and tiny bites of bread topped with fish, meat or vegetables.

Make sure you leave room for dinner as it’s not to be missed. Served on the terrace, supper consists of freshly caught fish, homemade pasta, meats, salads and mouth-watering desserts, all to be enjoyed by candlelight with the faint sound of live guitar music being played in the background. Finish with an local limoncello and an espresso for a real Italian experience.

Hotel Santa Caterina can also book excursions for guests and advise on bus and ferry services to nearby villages.

Boat trips, sailing and marinas

Don’t miss a boat trip to romantic Positano or Capri, or if you prefer, you can charter a boat and enjoy a spot of sailing in the stunning Mediterranean sea. The luxury marina has just hosted the 5th SuperWine Festival – one of the most prestigious wine shows in south east Europe.

SuperWine is a unique combination of a wine salon and an atmosphere of a two-day summer party in an exclusive environment – and the marina, based in Tivat in the heart of the UNESCO protected Boka Bay, offers the perfect location.

It is no surprise that Porto Montenegro is now quickly gaining a reputation as one of the most exclusive places on the Adriatic coast to sail, eat and drink. This stunning marina has recently become the first in the world to be awarded the prestigious 5 Gold Anchor Platinum accreditation!

Launched last year by operators of the Gold Anchor award scheme, The Yacht Harbour Association (TYHA) and the Marina Industries Association (MIA), this new Platinum accreditation has been designed to recognise a small but increasing number of marinas in the world which cater for a very discerning customer base.

Porto Montenegro certainly fulfils this criteria, especially when it comes to its facilities and food and drink.

The marina boasts an excellent choice of local and international restaurants and bars.
The 5-star Regent Porto Montenegro, offers a range of à la carte seasonal and organic Mediterranean and classic Montenegrin dishes created by chef Zeljko Knezovic, who used to work at the world-famous Michelin-starred Noma Restaurant in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Italian food enthusiasts will love Al Posto Giusto,where a range of traditional dishes, such as thin crust wood oven cooked pizzas, can be eaten in the restaurant’s expansive stone interior or alfresco on waterfront terrace. Chic wine bar  Crush Wine Station at Jetty 1 is the perfect spot to sample wine produced by nearby boutique vineyard Castel Savina and indulging in a cheese and charcuterie platter whilst overlooking the luxury super yachts moored at the marina.

Crush Wine Station features a carefully selected collection of regional wines, undiscovered labels, as well as cult classics from around of the world. It also offers tax-free champagne, fine wine and spirits.

Fine wine vineyards

Meanwhile, Montenegro itself, with its mountainous, relatively dry landscape, has a long-established culture of viticulture and winemaking.

The country is best known for its intense, deeply coloured wine made from the Vranac grape variety.

There are several excellent vineyards just a short ride from Porto Montenegro which offer tours and tastings.

Plantaze is one of the largest and most famous producers in the country, producing award winning fine wine.

At this year’s Decanter World Wine Awards alone the producer won 17 medals including gold for its 2012 rich dry red Stari Podrum Cabernet Sauvignon, with its red fruit, minty and chocolate flavours.

The vineyard is situated on a plateau some 30 kilometres from the Adriatic Sea, beside Lake Skadar, and has its own special microclimate.

Considered one of the largest and most beautiful vineyards in Europe, the Cemovsko Field as it is known, covers 2.300 hectares and employs more than 700 people.

The wine cellar at Šipčanik

The local red Vranac variety covers two thirds of the field and the white varieties are led by Krstač, grown exclusively in Montenegro.

It has several wine cellars including Šipčanik, which is set in a restored Yugoslav People’s Army underground aircraft hangar.

Also situated in the Podgorica region of Montenegro is the Mola Family Vineyard, which is on a hill overlooking two rivers and the ruins of a Roman city Doclea (Duklja).

The sunny and mountainous conditions help produce a fine grape crop which is turned into the popular Mola Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Located in the small village of Rogami just 10 minutes outside the city limits of Podgorica, the family run Radevic Estate produces award winning wine using only organic farming techniques.

To achieve maximum flavour potential, fruit growth is restricted to one cluster per vine before the grapes are handpicked and taken to the winery. Here, each individual bunch is de-stemmed before fermentation.

This nurturing technique has certainly produced results. Radevic won a silver medal in the prestigious Monde Selection International Wine Contest in 2016 and 2017.

Its dessert wine, Renee, which won awards in 2017, is noted for its ripe apricot and mango flavours, and is particularly good accompanied by foie gras.

Zoran and Gordana Obradovic run the small but gorgeous Castel Savina in Herzeg Novi at the entrance to Kotor Bay, on the opposite side of the bay from Porto Montenegro.

They have two hectares of land with international grape varietals – Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, and Chardonnay -and one indigenous white varietal, Žižak, which is similar to Dubrovnik’s Malvasia.

The vineyards are located in the best part of the estate, with plenty of sun exposure and views over the sea.

The grapes are picked and then turned into wine which is stored in French oak barrels in Savina’s wine cellars.

A beautiful marina, sailing, nature, food and wine…do we need any more reasons to visit Montenegro?

St Katharine Docks, London

The capital of Portugal offers stunning architecture, mild Mediterranean climate, excellent food, lively nightlife and plenty to do for sailing enthusiasts – it’s no surprise Lisbon is regularly voted one of the top destinations to visit.

The city caters for all tastes with history, art, culture, cuisine, stunning natural beauty and sailing on offer.

After a period of recession Portugal is now enjoying a strong financial and political phase and this is apparent in its capital where fashionably dressed, well-heeled locals enjoy the city’s many restaurants and bars.

Lisbon’s position on the river Tegus, its proximity to the seaside villages of Cascais and Sintra on the Atlantic and year round good weather and strong winds, make it an excellent sailing destinations too.

Things to do

Lisbon is an incredibly easy city to explore with many attractions and landmarks no more than a fifteen minute walk from each other.

Standing above the city is the São Jorge Castle, once the seat of power for 400 years. The castle is well worth the 15 minute uphill walk from Rossio underground station and is located in the old Alfama district, a Moorish and once poor area perched above the city and famous for its narrow streets, tiny squares and plenty of cafés and restaurants playing Fado on offer.

Alfama also houses the Sé Cathedral, Lisbon’s most important church, which dates back to the 12th century, and the Baroque St Anthony’s Church, which was rebuilt after the famous 1755 earthquake which sadly destroyed a vast part of the city.

The National Pantheon, also known as the Church of Santa Engrácia is also in Alfama and it houses the graves of explorer Vasco da Gama and Prince Henry the Navigator.

Also in Alfama is the Museu do Fado, a museum dedicated to the famous mournful Portuguese music genre.

If walking up and downhill is not quite your thing, hop on the Tram 28. Its route goes through the districts of Alfama and other notable neighbourhoods such as Graça, Baixa with its famous Rua Augusta, and its eponymous spectacular Arco, Praça do Comércio, Elevador Santa Justa – where for a mere few euros you can enjoy the most breathtaking views of the city and the banks of the river Tegus – Chiado with its many shops and bars and Estrela with its lovely Basilica.

Slightly out of the city centre, but well worth a visit is the Museu Nacional do Azulejo (National Tile Museum), an impressive collection of the famous azulejo tiles from the second half of the 15th century and also ceramics. The museum is housed in the Convent of Madre Deus, a beautiful building you won’t regret visiting.
If you don’t get a chance to explore the museum, you can see examples of the famous tiles all over Lisbon, decorating the façade of many buildings.

Unmissable is the Belém area, a short tram or bus ride away from the centre of the city. The district is well known for its custard tarts, the famous pastéis de Belém, which can be sampled in the eponymous bakery. The secret recipe for these delicious pastries is still based on the original one from the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, which incidentally is just around the corner from the patisserie. The imposing former monastery, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a stunning example of late Portuguese Gothic and well worth a visit.

A ten minute walk from the monastery will take you to another UNESCO site, you’ll find the Monument of Discoveries and the Belém Tower, another must-see site. Commissioned by King John II in early 16th century as a defence building to sit right at the mouth of the Tagus river, this example of Manueline style architecture has become a symbol of the city and one of its most visited landmarks.

Belém not only houses some hugely important historical buildings, but it has also become a true hub for modern art with plenty of museums being opened in the area. One of the newest and most impressive is the MAAT Museum (Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology). Opened in October 2016, this impressive construction, designed by renowned British architect Amanda Levete, sits on the river Tegus and its sinuous building has been created in harmony with its beautiful surroundings. So much so in fact that the curved roof, accessible by an outside staircase, offers stunning views across the river on one side and the city on the other,  and can be enjoyed by the public at any time.

The MAAT has been conceived as a space “for debate, discovery, critical thinking and international dialogue” and along with impressive exhibitions (Utopia/Dystopia currently on until 21 August and the eerie and downright genius of Cuban artist Carlos Garaicoa’s site specific show, Yo nunca he sido surrealista hasta el día de hoy / I’ve Never Been Surrealistic Until Today II until 18 September), it hosts a vast educational programme and regular events.

The hotel is eco friendly, so if you don’t feel you should have fresh towels every day (thus saving the water used to wash them), simply leave them on the hand rail. If you’d like them changed daily, just put them in the bath tub after use and they’ll replace them for you.

On the top floor the hotel boasts a fine dining restaurant, the Restaurant and Bar Rossio, which offers delicious meals in beautiful surroundings. Its menu offers Portuguese dishes with a modern twist. Fish features abundantly, but there are also plenty of meat and vegetarian options and the restaurant is happy to cater for different diets. The octopus carpaccio with Swiss chard salad and raspberry emulsion is the perfect starter: light, fresh and flavoursome. The grilled permit is also to be tried, as is the grilled cuttlefish with Nero risotto.

The bar has a great selection of expertly crafted cocktails to be enjoyed on the terrace, which offers stunning views of Restauradores Square. Make sure you go for dinner and watch the sundown with its stunning light over the city.
Breakfast is also served in the Rossio and the buffet has everything one could wish for: from cereals, fruit, yogurt, pastries and bread, to cold meats, smoked fish, eggs, sausages and cheeses.

Altis Avenida offers free, fast WIFI, a meeting room, business corner and valet parking. It’s also pet friendly for those who like to travel with their furry friends.

Alma Lusa is another fantastic option. Only a stone throw’s away from the Rua Augusta Arch, tucked away in the quiet Praça do Municipio (the square where Lisbon’s town hall stands), this is a gorgeous 28 room and suite boutique hotel housed in a lovely listed 18th century building. The decor is chic and stylish with an understated glamour and it celebrates all things Portuguese, from the bed linen to the beautiful bathing products found in the rooms. The staff are helpful and friendly and the hotel atmosphere, whilst very chic, is very comfortable and informal.

If you’d prefer to stay by the Tagus in Belém and do some sailing or other water sports, Altis Belém right on the river front is a great option. Smaller than the Avenida, but equally as beautiful, this hotel offers 45 rooms and 5 suites with views of the Tagus and the marina. All the rooms have a private balcony and a jacuzzi and you must take advantage of their SPA, which is a veritable oasis of relaxation with a dimly lit large heated pool and a small cold one, plus a sauna, Hammam, Turkish bath, small gym and a treatment room.
Don’t miss taking a dip in the hotel pool on the rooftop, which overlooks the river, marina and has a beautiful view of the Belém Tower, which is only five minutes away.

The hotel Michelin-starred Feitoria Restaurant and Wine Bar is also not to be missed and if you prefer a light meal the Cafeteria Mensagem offers deliciously prepared fresh food served on the terrace overlooking the river.

Food and drink

Lisbon is a mecca for foodies. The local cuisine features plenty of bacalhau (salt cod) dishes, seafood, the typical Caldo Verde (a potato, kale, onion and local sausage chouriço stew) and plenty of vegetable dishes: what the Portuguese can do with green beans is a revelation! The city caters for all tastes and there are plenty of international and vegetarian restaurants too.

Delfina at Alma Lusa

The Alma Lusa Delfina restaurant is open to the public and of course hotel guests and serves delicious, honest Portuguese food. The traditional code fritters or pastéis de bacalhau are flavoursome and light despite being battered and deep fried. Garlic and chilli prawns are fresh and make for a perfect starter, as does a beautiful cold soup of pumpkin and cress. For mains you can choose a variety of different dishes including hake with potatoes carrots and peas, which is filling and tasty, John Dory with an orange and sweet potato mash, spaghetti with mushrooms and asparagus, Portuguese liver with fries and a selection of sandwiches and salads also feature. Desserts are excellent too – the raspberry pannacotta comes highly recommended.
Portions are generous, so grab yourself a table overlooking the square and eat to your heart’s content.

Descobre

Located in Belém, Descobre is an elegant restaurant offering traditional Portuguese cuisine, beautifully paired with national wines. The oven roasted grouper and the cod loin are exceptional and a side dish of mashed green beans must be tried to be believed. There are several meat options too, including duck, veal and pork and vegetarians are well catered for with many mains available.

Ao Pé Da Sé

Ao Pé Da Sé in Alfama is a trendy café right by the Sé cathedral. Ideal for a light lunch or dinner after visiting the area, their menu offers a variety of platters, including salads and sandwiches, but it’s their fish carpaccios and tartares that really stand out. Get a table outside, order a local sangria and watch the world go by.

Wine

Portuguese wine may not enjoy the international reputation that Italian and French wines do, mainly because the locals have kept it a little bit secret and they’ve started exporting it only a few years ago, but it has to be tried, because it’s delicious and there are many varieties of red and white available. Douro is probably the best known, but also notable are Alentejo, Trasmontano, Minho, Alenquer, Bucella, Colares, Tejo and the wines from the Dão region to name a few.

Sailing

Lisbon and its surroundings offer plenty of sailing and water sport opportunities. If you’d like to sail the Atlantic, then Cascais and Sintra are ideal destinations. Leão Holandês offer some fantastic sailing trips and cruises, catering also for corporate functions, parties and weddings. If you’d like to charter your own yacht, Sailo has plenty to choose from and The Globe Sailor has 24 available yachts and catamarans to charter in Lisbon and the surrounding areas. With its year-around warm subtropical climate that reaches the high 20s and rarely dips below the low 20s, the Canary Islands are an appealing holiday destination all year around, peaking in autumn and winter when the Spanish islands attract tourism from Europe, especially British, Scandinavian and German visitors.

The archipelago comprises seven main islands: Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro.

The Canary Islands are popular sailing destination thanks to their marinas and year around northeasterly winds. The south-western Gran Canaria is also particularly well known because of the ARC Transatlantic Race, which sets sail from Las Palmas in November.

Where to say

Situated in the pretty town of Puerto de Mogán on Gran Canaria, only 45 minutes from Las Palmas airport, the four-star Cordial Mogan Playa Hotel is beautifully decorated with lush greenery, waterfalls, streams and wooden bridges that connect different areas. This particular feature mirrors Puerto de Mogán itself, which is known as ‘Little Venice’ because of its canals and bridges. The town is packed with shops, bars and restaurants. Unmissable is La Punta Yacht Club Puerto Deportivo Pasito Blanco in Gran Canaria’s San Bartolome de Tirajana. It can accommodate up to 388 boats measuring from 6 to 40 metres and offers plenty of facilities for a comfortable stay.

Its yacht club is made for sheer relaxation. Order a drink and some food as you take in the breathtaking view from your sun lounger.

If you love nature, the submarine adventure tour is unmissable. The 40 minute experience departs from Puerto de Mogán with eight daily trips and goes 25 feet deep into the water, where you’ll be able to see marine life and shipwrecks.

With 29 species of cetaceans found in Gran Canaria, it would be foolish not to take a catamaran trip to see whales and dolphins in their natural habitat. Daily trips leave from Puerto Rico.

Cuisine

Fresh fish, meat and vegetables are a staple diet. Many restaurants offer an international menu and cater for children. For breakfast, why not try the local gofio, a flour made from roasted grain that can be eaten with yogurt, milk and also added to soups.

Fuerteventura

Located in Caleta de Fuste, on the east coast of the island, it is less than 10 minutes from Puerto del Rosario and Fuerteventura airport. With 110 berths for maximum draughts of five metres, it is ready to welcome vessels of up to 16 metres in length. The port has shower and toilet facilities, as well as a dry dock, boat hoist and travelift for any necessary maintenance work. 24-hour berthing assistance and surveillance.

Gran Canaria

Pasito Blanco Marina

With moorings for 388 vessels of up to 40 metres in length, this marina is close to the tourist hub of Maspalomas, in the south of Gran Canaria. It has extensive services to ensure the comfort of guests and provides anything needed for their boat, from maintenance and mechanics to a 70-tonne travelift, with 24-hour surveillance. Supermarkets, laundry facilities and cafés are located around the marina.

Tenerife

Puerto Colón Marina

This modern marina in the south of Tenerife is 16 kilometres from the Reina Sofía airport. Located on Playa de las Américas beach, the marina is protected with a curved seawall and its maximum depth at low tide is two metres. It boasts 364 berths for anchoring and 237 dry loading berths for vessels of up to 24 metres making this marina one of the better prepared.

La Gomera

La Gomera Marina

This is the most comprehensive marina on La Gomera. Located to the east of the island, next to the capital San Sebastián. The marina has a berthing space for 335 vessels of 6 to 20 metres in length. User comforts include refuelling point, surveillance service, weather information and a supermarket. The depth of this marina varies between eight and ten metres. Its location, next to the city centre, makes it an ideal place for stocking up before setting sail again.

La Palma

Puerto de Tazacorte Marina

Located in a beautiful natural setting for shelter to the west of the island lies this family-friendly marina with numerous services such as mechanical expertise, free Wi-Fi and laundry facilities. Its 341 berths allow boats of up to 20 metres in length and three metres draught to moor here. It also has a 50-tonne travelift, boat hoist and chandlery.

El Hierro

Puerto de la Estaca Marina

Although this is a port for commercial maritime traffic and a marina for people and merchandise, it does have a 250-metre mooring line with 120 available berths. These are ready for pleasure craft of up to 30 metres in length and 6.5 metres draught. Services include a mobile ramp, 40-tonne travelift, boat hoist and dry dock.

British Airways, Easyjet, Monarch and Ryanair fly directly to the Canary Islands. Prices start at just over £200 return per person and flying time is around four hours from the UK.

Situated on the famous river Elbe and the second largest city in Germany after Berlin, Hamburg’s port is the most important in the country and the city celebrates its birthday every May, with a magnificent Maritime Festival.

The festival takes place in the Hafencity, Speicherstadt and Övelgönne areas of Hamburg, all by the port and the Elbe beaches.

The Hamburger Hafen celebrates its 828th birthday this year and there are big and bold celebrations in store, starting with the traditional international ecumenical service at St Michaelis Church followed by the jewel of the crown: the Grand Arrival Parade, which will see many ships, naval vessels, sailing and motor yachts, historic ships and steamships from all over the world make a grand entrance.

The three day celebrations kick off on Friday 7 May and culminate with the Grand Departure Parade on Sunday.

There will be plenty of entertainment all weekend for everybody, with food stalls, concerts, boat guided tours, Museum Harbour tours, talks, excursions, guided tours, regattas, bike tours of the area, a funfair, the LGBT Harbour Pride PortGayversary, the spectacular AIDA fireworks display on Saturday, and of course the chance to hop onto boats for a tour.

Venezia Certosa Marina, Venice

Situated on Certosa Island, a mere 10 minutes away from Venice’s famous St Mark’s Square, Venezia Certosa Marina is built on 24 hectares of natural beauty which has recently been regenerated.

James Bond and Spirit Yachts fans will be delighted to know that Venezia Marina Certosa’s CEO Alberto Sonino was the man in charge of overseeing the delivery of the yacht Soufrière, which starred in Casino Royale with Daniel Craig and Eva Green. Sonino coordinated the crew on location when they were shooting scenes in Venice.

Marina D’Arechi, Amalfi Coast

Families of all ages will enjoy exploring the markets that can be found scattered throughout historic city centres, baroque castles and along the shores of Lake Constance itself.

Konstanz, Germany: Christmas by the Lake

During the advent period and run-up to Christmas, the historic inner city in Konstanz is filled with Christmas market stalls stretching all the way to the harbour. There are over 170 artisans, traders and food vendors and you’ll even find the ‘Christmas Ship’, a floating market full of festive delights.

Bregenz, Austria: Gourmet Delights

In the very heart of Bregenz, visitors can enjoy around 40 Christmas stalls selling a huge range of sweet and savoury delicacies along with handcrafted gifts. There is also a specially built manger that can be found in the Nepomuk Chapel at Kornmarkplatz and a huge Christmas tree which is donated annually by a community from the Bregenz Forest.

Lindau, Germany: Christmas on the Harbour

The Christmas market at Lindau Harbour is by far one of Germany’s most exquisite offerings. Beautifully decorated wooden stalls, Christmas music and night-time tours are just a few things to expect. There is also a magical fairy-tale forest – huge fir trees line the harbour which create a peaceful atmosphere and the most wonderful aroma. The spirit of Christmas covers the entire island with shops and restaurants all joining in with festive cheer.

Bregenz – Lindau: The Christmas Ship

Located on the South East coast of Cyprus, in the Ayia Napa district, the £190 million mixed-use residential and commercial Ayia Napa Marina will boast 190 luxury apartments in two iconic twisting towers, 29 villas, a 600 berth full-service marina and boatyard, and a collection of retail, waterfront dining and lifestyle amenities.

The development is the brainchild of Cypriot entrepreneur Gerasimos Caramondanis and Egyptian investor Naguib Sawiris. The pair’s aim is to set a new standard for luxurious sea-front marina living.

The project was designed by SmithGroupJJR, a US-based architecture, engineering and planning firm internationally recognised as experts in waterfront design.

The Marina

The marina hosts approximately 600 yachts in wet and dry slips. Wet slips can accommodate yachts up to 60 metres in length and up to 80 metres by advance arrangement, while a valet-service dry stack storage facility is available for boats up to 10m in length.

The unique aspect of the marina is the ‘finger style’ berthing for yachts of 30 metres or less while floating docks assure comfortable access in all conditions. The marina basin has depths of 3.5 to 6.5 metres, ideal for superyachts and deep drafts of sailing boats.

Amenities will include comfort stations with showers and WC, internet access, a dedicated crew lounge, a yacht club and beach club. A supermarket, shopping and dining experiences are located just steps away in the Pyare Village.

The adjacent boat yard offers an extensive range of professional marine services such as hauling, launching, and boat maintenance operations.

Apartments and villas

Rising high above the marina are two iconic towers, over 100 metres tall, visible from both land and sea.  The towers’ twisting forms are inspired by the caryatids and sculptures found at archaeological sites throughout Cyprus and their facades are articulated with a latticework suggestive of the woodcraft and detail of ship-building.

Both towers have T-shaped plans that twist approximately 1.6 degrees per floor, rotating west to east as they ascend to take full advantage of the breath-taking panoramic views of the Mediterranean, the marina and coastlines stretching in either direction. The highest floors are oriented towards the east, overlooking the beaches.

The two towers have a total of 190 luxury apartments between them, ranging from a mix of one, two, three or four-bedroom residences, to full-floor penthouse apartments at the top two levels of each tower. The penthouse apartments feature 360-degree panoramic views whilst three apartments enjoy 180-degree views.

Twenty-nine luxury villas are located along privately maintained and secured roads on the marina island and the peninsula. Each lot includes significant space for landscaped gardens. Eighteen peninsula marina and Island Villas directly overlook the marina and feature walk-out access to secure docks. Twelve villas will be built on a man-made island inside the marina.

The Harlingen Harbour Crane, Friesland, The Netherlands

This must be one of the few hotels on our list where you can change your view at the touch of a, well, stick!

The unique Harlingen Harbour Crane is the perfect getaway for couples who like to boat watch.

Although just 60 square metres, the crane is surprisingly luxurious, with a mini bar, king size bed, a shower, toilet and even a small seating area.

Access to the crane, which was original built in 1967, is via two lifts.

A little staircase leads from the main room to the control cabin, where you can turn the crane 360-degrees to change your view.

“One chair, one stick. A tentative hand. A careful push to the left or right. Hold your breath. Sixty-five thousand kilos of steel start rotating at your very command. 360 degrees round and round and round,” promises the hotel’s owners.

There is even a large roof patio if you want to top up your summer tan with a bit of sunbathing.

The Figee level luffing crane was used until 1996 to unload timber freight from Russia and Scandinavia. The cabin is some 17 metres above the pier.

Prices start from €319 per night, including breakfast, which is delivered via one of the lifts each morning.

Sitting above the Rio Sever in the Parque Natural da Serra de Sao Mamede on the Spanish border in Portugal, River Lodge offers privacy and peace.

The Roter Sand Lighthouse is probably one of the remotest hotels in Europe!

Situated in the North Sea, around 30-miles off the coast of Bremerhaven, Germany, it offers a unique overnight stay for up to six people.

It is best to visit with close family and friends, as there is just one communal bedroom, a kitchen and living area and a bathroom.

Guests are transferred to the lighthouse via a special ferry service, which only runs weather permitting; in the late autumn/winter, visitors are not allowed.

Be prepared for your stay either being cancelled or extended by one or two days if weather is rough.

Fancy sleeping underwater? The floating hotel, Utter Inn (known as Otter Inn in English) offers you the chance to dream three metres below.

Designed by local artist,  Mikael Genberg, the hotel is located a very short boat ride away from Västerås harbour in central Sweden.

The Utter Inn has a 25-metre-square deck, where guests can relax after exploring the nearby uninhabited islands by dinghy.

Above the surface of the water, the hotel has a small kitchen, including a refrigerator, hot plate, crockery and 10 litres of fresh water.

There is also a dry toilet.

Although there is no electricity, this tiny hotel comes with a portable gas heater and lighting.

When it is time to sleep, guests can walk down the stairs to the underwater bedroom, which has four windows.

The Utter Inn is open between April and October.

The 2017 MYBA Charter Show will exhibit across OneOcean Port Vell’s four quays – Spanish Quay and Barceloneta Quay, Deposit Quay and Sota Muralla Quay.

Together, the quays are able to berth 68 yachts from 22 metres to 190 metres.

The entire marina’s 1,058 linear metres of quay will be used to host exhibitor tents, with the majority located directly in front of where the yachts will be berthed.

The show’s conferences will be hosted in venues across Barcelona City.

The show, which was previously held in Genoa, will be held on 24-26 April 2017.

Located on the south east coast of Kassandra, Halkidiki in Greece, Marina Miraggio is being billed as one of the most advanced marinas of its kind.

Its design was influenced by the results of a study into wind and currents by academics at Aristotle University.

The architects not only wanted to reduce the environmental impact of the development, but also to help out yacht skippers too.

The marina is designed to allow maximum water circulation to keep the development of bacteria to a minimum. In theory, this should reduce the need to clean the yacht’s hull.

The marina boasts two “bridge type” jetties. At 110 metres long, the jetty connecting the berthing area to the shore is the longest of its kind in Greece.

These two jetties are designed so the water in the marina is self circulating and self cleaning. It also aims to minimise swell and the swing of the yachts moored.

Miraggio Thermal Spa Resort’s marina can house 81 boats, up to 40 metres long.

All vessels will be offered an “individual and high quality mooring”, including launching ramp, 24-hour manning, berthing and security, state-of-the-art electricity and water service pedestals, a pump out station, Wi-Fi and a petrol and diesel gas station.

There is also a seafood restaurant, The Marine Tavern, which allow diners beach views across the bay.

For those wanting some luxury, the Miraggio Thermal Spa Resort has 300 elegant, spacious rooms. The majority of them face the Toroneos Gulf, and have stunning sea views.

Private pool are available in 48 of the rooms.

The thermal spa offers a full range of treatments, combining traditional and modern techniques.

The 330-acre seafront hotel also has 10 restaurants and bars, a dedicated childcare facilities and a modern conference centre with the capacity to accommodate up to 450 people.

The south coast of the country is a great option for those who’d prefer to turn themselves brown at this time of year, rather than watch the leaves do the same, and the climate is perfect for onboard or on land exertion.

Or for simply lounging on the beach, if that’s more your style.

But sea lovers are especially well catered for in this part of the world as the maritime history of the Turkish coast goes back almost as far as the history of the sail itself. In fact, Turkey’s Underwater Archaeological Museum holds the remains of the world’s oldest known shipwreck, discovered outside the small seaside village of Kas.

Easyjet and Monarch fly to Antalaya, the airport that best serves the south west coast of the country, for just over £100, depending on departure airport and time of day, and flights take just over four hours. Here’s our pick of the best spots to try.

Marmaris

Marmaris has a beautiful coastline, friendly people, good fresh foods and even local wines.

The Mediterranean resort town has a busy, pebbly beach, long seafront promenade, and beautiful clear waters. Nightlife is generally buzzing, although it’s likely to be more subdued at this time of year.

Marmaris sees itself as the yachting centre of Turkey and is situated right in the intersection of the Mediterranean Sea and the Aegean. Marmaris International Race Week runs from 24 – 30 October and promises to be hugely entertaining whether you’re a participant or an observer.

If you’re in the market for a sailing holiday, but would like somebody else to put the hard work in, Sail in Turkey offer a selection of one or two week yachting holidays that start in Marmaris.

If you’d prefer to charter a vessel, there are many companies to choose from, such as Phoenix Yachting or Sunreef Yachts Charter.

And if you’re planning a long trip, you could even pop over to the Greek Islands. But why not sail just down the coastline to Antalya?

Antalya

Antalya is the largest Turkish city on the west coast of the Mediterranean, and was once known as the gateway to the Turkish Riviera. The city is centred around a Roman-era harbour and at its centre is Kaleiçi, meaning ‘within the castle’, the beautifully preserved old city district.

If history is your bag, there’s Hadrian’s Gate to contemplate, built for the Roman emperor’s visit in 130AD, plus the Antayla Museum that has exhibitions from the Stone and Bronze Ages to the Byzantium.

As you’d expect from a city with such a long history of sailing, excursion yachts are available by the dozen in the harbour, which will take you to Kemer, Phaselis or Olympos.

If you prefer to travel in-land, the Manavgat Waterfalls are a breath-taking sight; tour companies such as Viator will take you there and back from your hotel.

Fethiye

Fethiye’s natural harbour is arguably the finest in the region, and scattered with pretty islands; you may recognise Şövalye Adası from the James Bond adventure ‘Skyfall’.

If you fancy a chill along your spine to cool you down on a hot day, you could take a trip to the ghost town, Kayaköy, occupied from ancient times until 1922 when the residents were pushed out during the Greco-Turkish war.

For a thoroughly modern adventure, you could book into the Hillside Beach Club that has sailing activities suitable for everyone from novices to experienced yachties.  For more ambitious and experienced sailors, the resort offers bareboat training on a Hanse 415 sailing boat, and divers of all levels can acquire SSI, PADI and CMAS certificates at Hillside Beach Club’s Diving Centre.

You’ll need to book quickly though: the resort is open until the end of October, then closed until April.

Cuisine

Turkish food is largely the heritage of Ottoman cuisine: a fusion of Central Asian, Caucasian, Middle Eastern, Balkan and Mediterranean.
Expect robust girdled meats, delicious flat breads, a whole lot of aubergine and, yes, kebabs.
There will be couscous dishes and falafel galore, stuffed vine leaves, cacık and pilav -a rice dish – all on offer.
For dessert, make sure you’ve saved room for halva and the sinfully sweet baklava.
And wash it all down with Turkish coffee, but beware, it packs a serious caffeine punch.
And don’t forget, there’s Turkish wine to enjoy too.

In recent years Sunsail has seen a growth in demand for adult only holidays that attract couples and groups of friends as well as parents who are taking a holiday without their children.

This flotilla is perfect for inexperienced flotilla sailors and skippers who want to brush up on their skills exploring the islands of Meganissi and Kalamos. Mountainous, pine-forested Kalamos has an air of serenity about it. It’s a quiet, unspoilt island with few inhabitants and only the monastery of Episkopi to explore. Port Athene lies on the north-eastern coast of Meganissi and is a fine place to moor for the night while exploring the coastline of this dreamy island.

Ionian Sea – Greece

The Greek Islands are ripe for a visit in the autumn months, with temperatures lingering in the low 20s until early November.

As you’d expect from a collection of islands, the opportunities to have fun in the sea are plenty, from charting a yacht to observing marine life in a glass-bottomed vessel.

There’s also history galore, with some landmarks dating back to the 5th century BC, and beautiful beaches for those who prefer to relax their mind as well as their body on holiday.

Flights from the UK to Crete cost around £200 with EasyJet or Ryanair, and take around four hours, depending on departure airport and time of day. And so it makes sense to start with the largest of the Greek islands…

Crete

Crete is the birthplace of the first advanced society in Europe, the Minoans. History fans can find out more about how this mysterious civilisation lived through a visit to the Palace of Knossos.

Those who prefer their history thrills a little more modern will be delighted by the old port town Rethymno where the twisting, shady lanes are a place to pleasantly get lost for an afternoon.

Sailing enthusiasts should note that Crete is the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and one of the driest and sunniest spots in the Med. The north side of the island borders the Aegean Sea and the south the Libyan, but the north coast is favourable for a sailing holiday as it’s less windy.

Charter companies tend to hire out boats on a weekly basis, and the multi-lingual skippers can usually help organise activities like scuba diving and windsurfing, as well as offer tips for places to eat and drink on land. Cretan Yachts offers vessels for charter for a week as well as day-long cruises.

Lefkada

The small island of Lefkada is probably the best Greek island you’ve never heard of – along with everyone else. This means that the glorious beaches, surrounded by white cliffs, and traditional village way of life are pretty much unspoiled. Egremni is arguably the finest of the beaches but be warned, it’s 355 steps down.

This island is an excellent setting for a family boating holiday as winds tend to be gentle, and the bays have plenty of facilities for water sport enthusiasts.

If you’d like somebody else to put the hard work in, Glaros is a luxury yacht available for charter. The crew can arrange snorkelling, fishing, scuba diving or beach combing, whatever takes your holiday desire, and will cruise between Lefkada and the other Ionion islands: Corfu, Paxoi, Ithaca, Cephalonia, Zakynthos, Kythera.

Alternatively, Sunsail offer flotilla holidays that start on Lefkada, also known as Lefkas, that take in Meganissi and Kefalonia and are ideal for families and less experienced sailors, as the flotilla follows a straightforward route with short stops in sheltered sailing areas.

You can get to Lefkada via the Greek mainland airport Preveza, then take a hire car or a taxi.

Saronic Islands

The Saronic Islands are where many mainland Greeks have holiday homes and they’re a great idea if you’re looking for something new.

For a relaxed holiday, try island hopping between the Agkistri, Aegina, Poros and Hydra islands. More experienced sailors could try the adventurous route of Kiparissi, Tiros and Plaka.

Sailing holidays offer flotilla holidays along both routes, which they assure us are suitable even for absolute beginners. The company also offer bare boat options, for those who have the qualifications to go it alone.

Cuisine

The food of the Greek Islands is among the healthiest in the world, and often includes farm-fresh and organic food, as well as the generous use of olive oil. The Greeks are very proud of their wine, so be sure to try it, and  you could try washing down a meal with a shot of rake. But just the one shot, we’d recommend. The same goes for ouzo, which can slip down dangerously fast when served ice cold.

Seafood, especially sardines, will be fresh and plentiful, and you could even cook up your own if you take advantage of the fishing trips on offer.
And don’t forget to pick up a jar of thyme-infused honey (meni) from roadside vendors that can be found across the islands.

Just a year after Uber began to service Turkey with its taxi service, the company announced UberBOAT, a service to transport people from Europe to Asia.

UberBOAT, which has teamed with Turkish boat company Navette, allows people to order the boats in the same way as they order Uber cars.

Through a smartphone app, users locate the nearest boat and when the captain calls to confirm availability, the boat arrives and the journey begins.

Uber launched the scheme after recognising that Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city, experiences severely heavy traffic and can make it difficult for people to get around.

“It is an alternative way to escape the city traffic and ease congestion on the roads, particularly on the two bridges that link Europe and Asia,” Austin Kim, Uber’s operation manager for Turkey, told AFP.

“By boat, you cross (the Bosphorus Strait) in five minutes, whereas by car, it takes about an hour and a half,” he said.

Fares start at 50 Turkish liras ($16 / 15 euros) but can be split between passengers. Each boat can hold up 10 people at a time.

Three months after launching, the new service has seen a greater demand across weekends.

“We have more clients at weekends. I would say that we carry around 50-60 people per week,” said the captain of one of the boats.

UberBOAT is struggling to gain more customers due to fierce competition between transport services ferrying across the Bosphorus Strait. Public ferries between the European and Asian sides of Istanbul can cost as little as 2.15 lira ($0.71) per ride.

Alternatively, there is the option of a water cab, which charges 46 Turkish lira (approximately $16 dollars) and additional fares for each nautical mile.

The Turkish government is currently working on a project to build “Kanal Istanbul,” another strait to bypass the Bosphorus to ease the boat traffic in the narrow waterway.

Uber remains a controversial company and is facing numerous challenges from other transport services across the world, including TFL, who have published proposed new rules for apps including Uber. The proposals include a mandatory five minute wait time, even if a car is available just around the corner. This means users will be unable to see the nearest cars when they open the app.

As Uber’s reach continues to grow around the world, the company is increasingly experimenting with different types of transportation, including UberBOAT.

More and more people are opting to go on holiday late in the season these days. September and October are the perfect time for a trip to Southern Europe if you want to avoid the crowds, scorching sun and save a few pennies.

The southern tips of Europe are a great option as they tend to have a mild climate and still be warm enough for a spot of sailing, water sports or simply lounging on the beach.

Sicily in Italy is the ultimate destination for an early autumn trip. With high temperature reaching 26 degrees and not dropping much below 16, October on the island can still feel like summer. And even if you get the odd cold or wet day, Sicily is so rich in culture, a sightseeing trip to one of its many fabulous locations won’t make you miss the beach.

With its Roman, Grecian, Phoenician, Arab, Norman, Carthaginian and Byzantine influences, Sicily truly is a stunning melting pot of ancient and modern cultures, which have informed its art, architecture and, of course, scrumptious cuisine.

Easyjet and Ryanair fly to Palermo and Catania from the UK for just over £100, depending on day of departure, and the flight only takes three hours.
Both cities are well worth exploring, before travelling around.

With its churches, palazzi and opera houses, port and beaches, you won’t be disappointed with the Sicilian capital city.
It’s easy to travel from Palermo to other towns and cities such as the stunning Taormina, Syracuse or Cefalu. From Palermo you can also reach the beautiful Aeolian Islands by ferry (http://www.usticalines.it).

Catania

Founded in 8 BC, Catania is the second biggest city in Sicily, after Palermo, with which it shares its Roman, Grecian and Norman culture.
Catania is lodged on the eastern coast of Sicily, sandwiched between Messina and Syracuse, and it’s the ideal base if you want to visit the neighbouring Mount Etna, the tallest active volcano in Europe.
The city was part of Magna Grecia, and this can be seen all over: from the amphitheatre to the Acropolis of Montevergine.
If beaches and deep blue sea are more your thing, you are in luck as Catania offers some beautiful locations and temperatures in October can reach up to 26 degrees, making it ideal for a late sunny holiday. Just like Palermo, Catania is a great starting point to visit the rest of the island, and ideal if you are heading to Lipari, Stromboli, Alicudi or Filicudi.

Aeolian Islands

Just off the northern coast of Sicily are the stunning Aeolian Islands, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The tiny inhabited isles are Lipari, Stromboli and Vulcano both with active volcanos, Salina, Alicudi, Filicudi, Panarea and Basiluzzo.
Lipari is the biggest one and offers more activities and nightlife, but all of them are naturally breathtaking, with blue seas, beautiful beaches and plenty of sailing and water sports to keep you busy. In Stromboli and Vulcano you can climb up the volcanos too for the experience of a lifetime.
The Islands are easily accessible by ferry run by Siremar (http://www.siremar.it/en) and Ustica Lines (http://www.usticalines.it) from Milazzo, Naples and Reggio Calabria. The nearest airports are Catania and Palermo.

A popular destination for the well-heeled, Taormina has been a popular tourist destination for centuries thanks to its mix of stunning natural beauty, ancient ruins, culture, lively nightlife, unbeatable cuisine, fabulous city centre with its desinger shops, beautiful views of Mount Etna, idyllic beaches and proximity to cities and old towns. Only an hour away from Catania airport, which is served by Easyjet, Alitalia, BA and Ryanair, Taormina is best enjoyed out of season, in spring or autumn, when the crowds have left, but the spirit of the place is still alive and the temperatures are still warm, but bearable at around 24 degrees in October.
Taormina offers a variety of water sports: from sailing to windsurfing, scuba diving, snorkelling and canoeing – even in winter!
As with everywhere else in Sicily (and Italy really!), if you are a bit of a gourmand, this town will not disappoint. From family run trattorias to chic restaurants, Taormina is a veritable feast for the palate.

Agrigento, Noto and Erice

Also not to be missed is the city of Agrigento. Venture into the old town where you will be able too see some of the most striking Greek ruins, including the Unesco-listed Valley of the Temples. Noto, another UNESCO World Heritage site located in southern Sicily, and famous for its Baroque architecture is also worth a trip. Erice on the west coast is a walled town perched on top of Mount Erice with sweeping views over the city of Trapani. It boasts Greek, Phoenician, Saracen and Norman architecture and ruins, boasts two ancient castles and remains of the temple of Venus.

Ustica and Pantelleria

The small island of Ustica is nothing short of idyllic. It not only boasts ancient culture and ruins, such as Greek and Phoenician but it’s the ideal location to explore the coastline and enjoy water sports. In the Strait of Sicily you’ll find another little jewel: the island of Pantelleria. It also has a natural reserve and a lake called Specchio di Venere, which rain and hot springs formed naturally in a volcanic crater.

Cuisine

Sicilian cuisine is second to none, thanks to its variety of local produce and the passion of the Sicilians in the kitchen. Whether you love fish, bread, cheese, primi piatti such as pasta, vegetables or you have a sweet tooth, you will find the most delicious food here.
A famous dish is pasta alla Norma, with fried aubergines, tomatoes and ricotta, a cheese Sicilians are proud of and use in sweet and savoury recipes alike. Famous cakes and puddings include cannoli siciliani, a sweet rolled up thin pastry filled with sweet ricotta and candied fruit, granita and almond cake. Local wines are also renowned around the world.
